Old iron pipe coming out of a damaged wall

Broken Pipes Water Damage Shut the main. Then call.

A supply line pushes until someone stops it. We clean up the water damage from there.

A line under pressure

It will not stop on its own.

A drain only leaks when something runs down it.

A supply line is under pressure all day, so a split keeps pushing water until the main is off.

The main comes first, before towels, buckets or a phone call to anyone.

It is usually where the water line comes into the house, so find it before you need it.

Once it is off, opening a low faucet lets the lines above drain out.

Supply line water starts clean, which the S500 calls Category 1.

Clean water still reaches ceilings, walls and floors, and it does not stay clean.

Time and contact with building materials can make it worse.

Signs of a broken line

What a break looks like from inside the room.

  1. 01

A ceiling that sags or drips

Water pools on top of the drywall, so keep everyone out from under a sagging spot.

  2. 02

    Water at a light fixture

Treat it as electrical too: shut power at the panel only if you can reach it dry.

  3. 03

A wet patch halfway up a wall

Floor water climbs from the bottom, so a patch mid-wall points at a line inside it.

  4. 04

A running meter, faucets all off

With every fixture shut, a moving meter says water is going somewhere you cannot see.

Once the main is off

From the ceiling down to the floor.

  1. 1

    Main off, then call

    (888) 929-0245. Tell us which floor it came through and if a plumber has been out yet.

  2. 2

    Trace the path

Meters follow the water from the break across ceilings, walls and the rooms below.

  3. 3

    Open it and dry it

Wet ceiling material comes down where it has to, and the drying gear runs floor by floor.

  4. 4

    Read it floor by floor

Meters go back over the ceilings, walls and floors until the whole path reads dry.

A cold night, a split line, water through the ceiling.

Freezing nights

A hard freeze can split a line.

Freezing nights are when a line in an outside wall, crawl space or unheated garage can split.

Often nothing shows until the thaw, when the ice lets go and the line starts running.

So the end of a cold snap can be the moment you find the ceiling wet.

A second line on that same cold wall can split on the same night, so check it too.

Questions we get

On this one, people ask.

Will you fix the pipe itself?

We clean up the water damage a broken line leaves behind.

If the pipe itself still needs a plumber, tell us when you call.

Drying and pipe work have to line up, so it helps to know early.

The ceiling is bulging. Should I poke it?

Stay out from under it and keep people out of the room.

Water sitting on drywall is heavy, and a soaked ceiling can drop with no warning.

Move what you can from the side of the room, then call (888) 929-0245.

It was clean water. Does it still need drying?

Yes, clean water soaks a wall just as well as dirty water.

EPA gives 24-48 hours to dry water-damaged areas and items to prevent mold growth.

Tell us what got wet and we will tell you what we would check first.
